The Wedding

Hakafot - The seven circles.

seven circlesWhen Jennifer arrives at the chupah, she will circle Eric seven times, escorted by her mother and maid of honor. This custom is a symbol of the space the couple will be creating and sharing throughout their lives.

Erusin - Betrothal or Kiddushin - Sanctification

Benny saying the blessingSue sipping wine to JenniferThe betrothal benedictions in the Jewish Wedding Ceremony has two basic parts, the first of these is called the Erusin, also called kiddushin. This section begins with a blessing, recited by Rabbi Zippel, over a full cup of wine. The kiddush cup used for this blessing belongs to Eric, and was a Bar Mitzvah jpgt from his Grandparents on his father’s side. The first cup that will be shared by the bride and groom is a symbol of joy and abundance.

The Ring!Roger sipping wine to EricEric’s giving, and Jennifer’s acceptance of the ring is a central act of the Kiddushin. Eric will place the ring on Jennifer’s right index finger and recite the marriage blessing: "Behold, you are consecrated to me with this ring according to the laws of Moses and Israel." Following this act, the marriage is legalized, and the ring ceremony completes the betrothal. At this time, the Rabbi will make a public reading of the Ketubah, which will separate the two parts of the ceremony. The document is recited in the original Aramaic, the legal language of the ancient Jewish people. Following the reading, the document will be handed to Eric, who in turn gives it to Jennifer, who retains it as her personal possession from this day forward.

Nissuin - Marriage

Leave the ChuppahThe second part of the ceremony consists of the recitation of the Sheva B’rachot, the seven marriage blessings under the chupah. The blessings are recited over a second cup of wine. The Kiddush cup for this blessing belongs to Jennifer’s father. Following the blessings given to the couple, Eric will break a wine glass under his foot. This reminds everyone that even in a time of joy and happiness, we must remember the destruction of our temple, and other misfortunes of the Jewish people. The breaking of the glass also serves as a separation between the awe of the ceremony, and the celebration that will follow.

According to tradition. . . . . The Groom is obligated to give the bride a token as a symbol of the contract made between them during Erusin. However, it is not required that the bride offer a token to her groom. Jennifer has chosen at this time, following the breaking of the glass as they step out from under the chupah, to publicly give Eric a ring as a jpgt of her love and devotion. NOW, the guests will sing Siman Tov to the couple as the recessional begins!

Yichud - Togetherness or Union

Yachud RoomImmediately following the ceremony, the Bride and Groom spend a short period of time together in a private room. There they will share their first meal together as husband and wife. The witnesses, Daniel Klaristenfeld and Reuben Kahn, stand outside the door to attest to the validity of Yichud, and ensure privacy.

[While in the yachud room Benny later joined us to sign the state wedding licence]

Seudat Nessuin - Wedding Meal

Marrage contractIt is a mitzvah, or commandment to share in rejoicing with the bride and groom in the wedding meal. To begin the meal, Rabbi Wenger will say hamozti, the blessing over the bread. So, without further ado ……
