The Engagement

EricIn the summer of 1995 Eric bought Jennifer a fancy picnic basket for her birthday. During the entire fall semester we did not have a chances to use it. Finally before finals Eric said to Jennifer, "You know, we haven't used your picnic basket yet" So, Jennifer suggested that we have a picnic on Friday, the day after finals, jobs, and internships ended for the semester. Eric was relieved because everything was going as planned . . .

Friday came and Jennifer drove over to Eric's. They packed up the picnic basket and were off! When they arrived at the park it was already getting cold and windy. Eric wanted to go to the top of the hill which over looked the entire San Fernando Valley, while Jennifer, who easily gets cold, suggested that we sit under a beautiful tree that was much closer to the car.

Earlier in the year, Eric had asked Jennifer what she wanted for Chanukah, and her response had been "An engagement ring! After all - if you give me stuff - later you'll just have to move more stuff!" Well, Eric couldn't let her know what he was planning, so he avoided telling her anything for as long as possible, but after constant questioning Eric told her that she better not get her hopes up! Eric felt badly but he couldn't let on to Jennifer what he was planning . . .

Back at the park about 10 minutes after we arrived, Eric told Jennifer how badly he felt about her feelings regarding what she wanted for Chanukah, and that he had brought her first Chanukah gift to the park to make up for it. Eric went to her trunk and got out a huge box. (He had put the box secretly in her trunk while she was packing up the picnic basket.) He walked over and gave it to her. She was curious, but looked disappointed.

Jennifer and EricJennifer looked at the box and it had a note that reiterated what Eric first said about being sorry, but too bad about not getting engaged. She opened the box up (Much too fast! - Eric had wrapped the box soap opera style so she wouldn't have to rip the paper open) and found another box, wrapped differently and it had another note which was similar.

Needless to say but there were three more boxes all with notes attached and the last one said, "Jennifer, I want to spend my life with you." She opened that up and there was a ring box!

Then she froze! (Very convenient!) Eric was able to pull out the ring box, open it and ask, "Jennifer, Will you marry me?"

She then SCREAMED!!! Louder than he had have ever heard any one scream before! Eric's first thought was "Oh wow, that was loud, I hope the park's neighbors don't think I'm attacking her." (A police car did slowly drive by about 10 minutes later.) Finally, after a lot of screaming and crying he slipped the ring on her finger and asked, "So what's your answer?" And of course she said, "YES!"
